Well, he's still going to vote against his nomination.

First time ever for a filibuster attempt on a defense secretary nomination, right? Seems kind of shameful to me.

Do you think the GOP begins to understand that a majority of the American public is fed up with their congressional obstructionism?

I guess John Tower's nomination wasn't technically filibustered, but it was held up, and we were without a SecDef for three months.

    Cloture vote fails.

  5. Good thing the new Congress just started. The GOP has to realize at some point two years of obstructionism won't play well in 2014. Blocking a nominee on an issue unrelated to the nominee doesn't seem like a smart move.

When the Senators go home tonight, Obama can make him a recess appointment.

Has the president moved toward anything consonant with a doctrine?
Even the hated GWB is credited with a careful formation of that.
Obama has drunkenly straddled the line of realist and idealist.
No one still knows where he's leaning.

Robert Kennedy called himself a pragmatic idealist. I liked it then. I like it now with Obama.

Fact is, the administration is waging an effective, efficient (dollars and bodies) and modern fight against terrorists, something the previous administration failed to do, and is getting strong results.

FYI, the "Bush Doctrine" was nothing more than a neo-con wet dream. Pre-emptive war! Regime change!

How did that work out in terms of: Cost? Body bags? Lasting stability?

How is Obama's policy any different? Drone strikes, Libya?

No ill-reasoned, trumped up and costly ground wars combined with more effective counter-terrorism efforts. Huge difference in dollars and bodies plus improved American credibility abroad.

I cannot believei how in the tank some of you are for Obama. It's almost comical. "More effective counter-terrorism efforts" how? In what way? "Improved American credibility abroad" in what terms? This would be funny if it weren't so sad and pathetic.
