What is it about the abortion debate that makes Republicans put their foot in their mouths? The latest:

In other words, the Republicans are at least as bad as the Democrats. Nice to see you finally admit it.

I think I know what you think is offensive about what he said, but tell me anyway. Not Akin, but Franks.

Bud Kennedy of the Fort Worth S-T had a column today on the 50th anniversary of desegregation in the city.

It got me to googling some related articles and I found this...

Ironically, the break-down of Jim Crow laws in the 1960s led to the collapse of the small black business district that had flourished on the edge of downtown. Now black customers could shop in the up-scale department stores, bank in the major banks, and get their hair cut at the same barber shops as whites. Black-owned businesses were unable to compete, and one-by-one they closed down, leaving empty store fronts and deserted blocks.
Same thing happened in other places, as I once pointed out on here. The Negro League's demise also came with the desegregation of the majors.

The last time I posed this question, a couple of knee-jerk adversaries dismissed it as an endorsement of segregation. It wasn't then and isn't now. But it damn sure seems interesting that urban decay hurt many black communities with the advent of desegregation; "white" stores and restaurants saw the advantage of profits over prejudice and blacks began shopping at those in much the same way we all hit the new eatery in town. Well, the whites didn't break their necks supporting the black businesses that were suddenly in decline and avoided anyway by whites up to that point. So in this respect, did desegregation cause as many problems as it solved? Was the real motive all along in the name of profits? Maybe, just maybe, we'll get some mature discussion on this.

What's there to discuss? White people didn't want to buy from black businesses even after desegregation, and black people naturally shopped at deregulated white establishments, thereby reducing the success of black-owned businesses.

Scared white people also moved out of the cities rather than mix with the Negroes, so there were fewer people overall to shop there.

But a dog panel discussion would be entertaining. Desegregation: good or bad?
