Part of this wouldn't happen if families weren't keeping up with the Joneses. Of course, much of it is the fault of overpriced housing in much of the country. We looked until we got something of a deal...$79,000 in our area is a lot of house for the money. Hell I wanted to hold out for a $50,000 fixer-upper but I was concerned about those neighborhoods being largely rentals.
Housing is one of the biggest scams in America. Just on what I pay per month, if I pay it off in the 30 years of the note, I will have spent $270,000....When we hear how housing is a great investment, it's only if in that 30 year period, the home would sell for $300,000 plus in the end.
My parents paid $10,000 for a house in 1960. Today that house appraises for $95,000. I don't think housing prices will do for today's homeowner what they did for those who bought in the 50s or 60s.

 

That certainly has mellowed out the Greeks over the years.

Roberts isn't legislating from the bench -- he's bomb-throwing into legislation from the bench. Witness his parsing of the Affordable Care Act, for example. Of course, he well knows that bomb-throwing is as good, or better than, legislating. Then again, who is an activist judge is in the eye of the political beholder.
