I don't much care whether or not Christie gets gigged because he's fat -- were I a candidate for office I'm sure there'd be plenty of similar comments directed my way -- but I resent the hell out of blanket statements like that. I consider myself to be on the right and you would NEVER hear such statements/jokes coming out of my mouth.

Then you're unlike a very large portion of your party, George. And much like the abortion debate, that's just a reality you're going to have to square with yourself.

It's the one that's still acceptable.

You can rip someone's race or heritage, but people will say "How DARE you!?!?!!?" (unless maybe if it's an Asian. Society's still in the dark ages there).

But you rip their weight, it's "Snicker, snicker, they sure are fat!"

Don't agree about the right's supposed attitude. They're all racists? Yeah, that's not true.

Agree that Starman is basically a jester here. And I would argue that old_tony isn't stupid at all. The people who fall for his instigation, though . . .

Not that it's OK to be unkind about it, but there's a reason that being obese is more open to criticism than being ugly or being black or having a disability - it's largely a result of that individual's choices, usually. So in a way, you aren't criticizing his appearance, but the journey to his appearance.

Making fun of Paul Ryan's appearance is just silly, though. He's in shape. Short of anorexia or body-building monstrosities, t's asinine to make fun of people for keeping themselves in shape.

    1. A little but I expected no less from the sources, particularly the repulsive pig Limbaugh.

    2. Not really. Michelle made the choice to get into the public spotlight.

    3. Not in the least. Anybody who runs for national office should expect nothing less. I cared nothing when Clinton was depicted as the Pillsbury Doughboy.

I still think there are other physical traits that people comment on all the time. John Edwards' hair was a popular one because he was SO GAY!!!! That UnskewedPolls shithead mentioned Nate Silver's thin, effeminate nature. Kerry picked up the nickname Lerch. And you are right, Asians get mocked in ways that other minorities wouldn't.

Let R be that set of the politically inclined populace that would be considered on "the right."
Let r be that subset of R which identifies primarily with the Republican Party.
Let rr be that subset of r which would find racist jokes about President Obama (or anyone of African descent) to be funny.

It is reasonable to assume that rr is, regrettably, not a null set. By the arithmetic implied by your first post, however, rr = R.

And you're telling me I have some squaring with reality to do?

I am telling you this: The Tea Party is in control of the GOP. The Tea Party is the birthers. So if that's your side and you're not repulsed enough to get away from that kind of hate, don't get upset that you get lumped in with it.

If memory serves, wasn't Edwards hair a mocking point given: A) how much he spent (spends) keeping it that way; and B) the disconnect between those haircut fees and his "champion of the downtrodden" schtick?

That was such utter bullshit (by the polls guy).
