    Re: THE 2012 POLITICS THREAD

There are scientists who spend their entire lives traveling to freezing-ass places like the far reaches of the North Pole, and ridiculously long hours drilling down thousands of meters into the ice to take samples so that they find out what the earth's atmosphere was like 420,000 years ago. They spent weeks, months, even years living in huts, or on boats, eating MREs or tunafish out of a can, studying ocean microbes and writing tedious and boring research papers that are backed by actual evidence that was meticulously contrasted with control groups. They get up a 4 a.m. when it's 50 degrees below zero to check their equipment and prevent frostbite. They can prove, through carbon dating, that permafrost that has existed for 120,000 years is melting at a rate that will see it disappear within the next century. That in the last 10 years, Glaciers in Iceland that have existed for at least 1,000 years have disappeared. These scientists are anonymous, often poorly-paid, but are obsessive about their jobs. They are, without argument, some of the smartest people on the planet. They say global warming is real, that it's man made, and that atmospheric temperatures are higher now than at any point in the last 420,000 years.

On the other side, we have a guy who walks out into his front yard, licks his finger and sticks it in the air, and says "It's 70 degrees in November. This global warming stuff is bullshit. Dumb liberal scientists are biased."

And we are supposed to present this as two equally valid "opinions."

The myth regarding climate change is all due to Nate Silver skewing the data becaus he's gay.

Because we drive cars and use aersol cans obviously, that has to be the answer.

I mean, the same damn thing happened when the cavemen walked the earth and boom we went from the Ice ages to the mini Ice Ages to what we have now. Then they kept using aersol cans and the Dark Ages began!!!

The earth changes, evolves, moves forward and always has -- some believe this used to be one connected land mass not continents separated by water.

The sun burns hotter now than ever, some scientists estimate 1,000 times hotter - are people using SUV's on the sun?

There isn't a man-made reason for this nor is there a man-made way to change this.

The fact that we have a lunatic fringe trying to make a cottage industry out of "Climate Change has us all doomed" kookacracy is alarming and scary because it proves how dumb and gullible a segment of our population really is.

Yeah well I saw a really funny cartoon show on FOX that had a scientist as a weirdo who picked his nose and farted a lot. What more evidence do you need?

I don't dispute the fact that the climate is changing.

It is the silly idea that somehow we are the cause of it.

And for every one of your silly liberal scientists who claim as much there is a not so silly and just as smart scientiest, biochemist, astrophysicist, biologist, microbiologist whose research indicates it isn't man made with plenty of proof throughout the history of the world to back them up.

Like I said, it is kookacracy - but hey, what is that you told me -- you better go get canned goods and hide behind your steel door because the world is going to end the next time someone sprays some lysol......

Is Gary Johnson going to be Romney's Nader? I see he's getting 4 percent of the vote in Colorado. (Supposedly it's a 1 point lead for the President there.) I know Colorado frequently has a case of the libertarian fever, but what is he getting in places like Florida and Virginia and New Hampshire? Is he a draw in any of the other battleground states?

So in other words, climate change MIGHT not be true, so let's drill drill drill, pump pump pump, and burn burn burn as fast as we possibly can.

No drop of oil, no chunk of coal, no ounce of natural gas left unburned.

I'm almost okay with hearing out a reasoned argument denying man is the cause of global warming. What I can't abide is listening to somebody denying the temps are going up.

And those temp-denying folks make up a big chunk of the Republican Party right now. Problem for you guys.
