    Avatar bet anyone?

I believe Obama is going to win, and it seems like there's a few people really confident that Romney is going to win. If Obama wins, I get to pick your avatar for two weeks, and you get to pick mine if Romney wins?

    Any takers?

As for a career politician track...

If you do win a couple Congressional terms, you are fairly set. I believe you get health insurance for life but the doors of media open to a former Congressman. The money is made afterwards, be in PR, academia, lobbying (the big money) or books/columns/talk shows.

Look at Mike Huckabee. Or even Michele Bachmann. She can parlay her terms in Congress and failed/gimmicky presidential run for the next 20 years. Having people like Hannity slurping over her at every chance doesn't hurt.

Amy had a post on Politics poll thread mentioning that Minnesota has always had liberal roots. It's something I've always wondered about because it seems like such an outlier from most of the Midwest. So as not to sully up the poll thread I am moving the discussion here.
    Exmedia had an interesting take:

Very few social conservatives? I think it's just the opposite.

500 hundred retired Admirals and Generals personally paid for an ad in the Washington Times today endorsing Romney.

Some pretty big names listed including Tommy Franks.

Way to go generals in wasting your money playing to the base. Where's McChrystal and Schwarzkopf?

Speaking of Franks, great article from the Atlantic here about the institutionalization of mediocrity at the top of our military.

Another good piece along the same lines, but this time as regards the military academies:

Didn't get much traction when I talked about it before, but perhaps now that there's a link that might change.

The farmers of the upper midwest (Scandanavian/German/Russian ancestry, mainly) historically distrusted Wall Street, big banks in Minneapolis/Chicago, the railroads, etc., who routinely under valued their crops and overcharged for the transportation of their crops.

Hence the rise of the DFL in Minnesota, the Non-Partisan League in North Dakota, etc. That's why there is a State Bank of North Dakota (which works wonderfully, keeps assets in the state, and actually lends out money), a state grain elevator system, etc.
