    Re: THE 2012 POLITICS THREAD

I hate the way both candidates avoid taking questions from the press. Hate it.

You should be smart enough to answer questions.

One of the things I most admired about Giuliani was that he had a daily press availability. Every fucking day.

If you know where you stand on issues, and you're used to taking questions, you tend to get pretty good at it.

I get that politicians don't want to distract from the "issue of the day" and want to "control the message" but answer a fucking question for Christ's sake.

The other thing I don't understand is why Romney hasn't done more favorable media interviews. He should have been calling into every (reasonable) right wing radio host in the nation over the past week. I'm not sure he called into any.

I don't get it. Obama is calling into the "Pimp with the Limp" and Romney's not going on Hannity or Michael Medved?

Boy did you leave yourself open to the "Because there aren't any reasonable right-wing radio hosts in the nation" comeback right there ... [/chuckling]

    Well, there's that.

I mean, I wouldn't recommend going on Michael Savage (if he was still on the air).

But, he should have been calling Hannity, Medved, Dennis Miller, Laura Ingraham, Dennis Prager, and a whole bunch of local hosts.

He should have been on FOX & Friends, and other TV programs.

And, while he would get beat up for appearing on Rush or Glenn Beck, I'd have him call into both shows today and or tomorrow -- too late for the criticism to go anywhere, but in time to make sure the base turns out.

YF, I think the explanation is Romney's very risk-averse personality, politically speaking. I don't think he's afraid of what he'd say on one of those interviews, but of what the interviewer might say.

Fully agreed on Romney's silence with interviews. Regardless of his debate performance in Denver, the people who run his campaign are idiots. They don't see the big picture on media access and still being able to control message.

They are so paranoid about the MSM and the potential of a gotcha question that they threw away endless media exposure in swing states. Obama has done a decent job of talking in swing states. On those days, he would get 3 or 4 minutes of selling himself... for free.

Romney wanted no piece of it. Puzzling.

Just got a robocall "Hi, this is (name redacted because I have respect and sympathy for people with the guts to run for office), candidate for state Senate in the XX Middlesex district."
That's where I hung up. He's not the incumbent, which means he's the Republican, which means Obama has in Mississippi than he has in this district. But the funny part is, the robocall starts with a silence and then the guy taking a loud audible deep breath before beginning his spiel. They must've done 30 takes, then gone, "ah fuck it, let's go with this."

It is a lot easier to stay on message when you know you'll only get softball questions so Obama does have an advantage there.

You think Hannity would've grilled Romney?
