Fact: In the last 20 years, a Republican president has won the popular vote once. Since 1988, they've never broken 290 electoral votes.

It's a dedicated base. But it ain't expanding much lately.

Gloating and patting oneself on the back for supporting the side that will inevitably win this election is like celebrating a football win against the Indiana Hoosiers.

Sour grapes in support of the side that will lose the election after spewing nothing but hate, gloom and doom for the past four years is like an Indiana fan whining that the Hoosiers deserve to play for the national title despite yet another 4-8 season.

    Hey, not really.

But I appreciate the thought that my beloved Hoosiers could actually win four football games again someday.

It will be interesting to see how the Repugs regroup if they lose to Obama again. I can't imagine another four years of their divisive behavior in Congress.

One of two ways. Either they shake loose the tea party obstructionists or scream "Mitt wasn't a true conservative" and go harder to the right.

Which do you think will happen?

The revisionist history will be strong. For one, you'll hear all about how Romney was too moderate and phony and not a real conservative.

Yet, the whole reason he got the nominee was because he ran against other conservatives, staunch and hard-right conservatives, who embarrassed themselves and appalled many parts of the country with idiotic views. So Romney wins the nomination because the GOP found him "most electable." Then, if he's not elected.... rewrite!

Exactly, the glaring problem with the "not a real conservative" excuse is that he ran against a pack of professed "real conservatives" in the primaries, all of whom got their asses kicked. If the right wing base rejected that pack, safe to assume the general electorate would've resoundingly done so.

The saddest part is Romney actually was their best bet amongst their candidates in a general election. But still a horrible choice. There are some Republicans that I think would've better appealed in a general (Christie, Daniels, Huckabee, etc.), but those guys didn't want anything to do with running in the clownshow that were these Republican primaries.

Let's say for a moment that the Christie's, the Daniels, and a few others who sat out, had a chance. And they might have.

Let's also say they feel at least as strongly anti-Obama as Romney, perhaps even more so, perhaps in line with the other GOP candidates. If you assume that, you can also safely assume that they feel the country is headed in the wrong direction.

If they believe that, how cynical is it for them to sit out and wait four years so they can be more electable? Do they believe in public service? Why aren't they patriotic enough to take the harder road to the Oval Office and run now if they feel the country is going to hell? Or is it all just about an easier path to election, consequences to the nation be damned?

Wait ... don't answer that. We already know the answer.
