    Of course not.

Especially when charitable contributions are 100% tax deductible.

You're being mean, Az. Mitt favors a tax code that forces him to pay 0.82 percent.

This new member, George Hayek, has some interesting thoughts.

And, I like that he's using his real name, instead of hiding behind anonymity like so many others here.

I know you know this, but the deduction is taken from earnings, not taxes.

People make it sound like you can choose to pay taxes or give to charity.

People like Mitt make it sound like that, you mean. When he released (a few of) his returns, he went to great lengths to say that his taxes plus charity equaled more than 20 percent.

Kind of glossed over what his actual tax rate was.

There are definitely some who would like that.

The rich aren't giving to the "right" charities:

Secularists resent religious based donations -- like Romney's to his Church -- being deductible, and liberals always think they kno how to spend your money better than you do.

Philanthropy and greed -- I'd prefer self-interestedness -- are absolutely not mutually exclusive. A self-interested person can maximize his/her utility by donating all to charity, none to charity, or somewhere in between.

    Oh! Shit, my bad.

Well, at least we still have Ben Hecht and a few others who use their real name.

    From that NYT story:

    What a godawful last name!

But Herr Doktor Hayek is a baseball-loving mashup of Austrian-Chicago school economics and bow ties.

As would the rich themselves, I'm sure.
