Even by President Obama's loquacious standards, an answer he gave here on health care Friday was a doozy.

Toward the end of a question-and-answer session with workers at an advanced battery technology manufacturer, a woman named Doris stood to ask the president whether it was a "wise decision to add more taxes to us with the health care" package.

"We are over-taxed as it is," Doris said bluntly.

Obama started out feisty. "Well, let's talk about that, because this is an area where there's been just a whole lot of misinformation, and I'm going to have to work hard over the next several months to clean up a lot of the misapprehensions that people have," the president said.

He then spent the next 17 minutes and 12 seconds lulling the crowd into a daze. His discursive answer - more than 2,500 words long -- wandered from topic to topic, including commentary on the deficit, pay-as-you-go rules passed by Congress, Congressional Budget Office reports on Medicare waste, COBRA coverage, the Recovery Act and Federal Medical Assistance Percentages (he referred to this last item by its inside-the-Beltway name, "F-Map"). He talked about the notion of eliminating foreign aid (not worth it, he said). He invoked Warren Buffett, earmarks and the payroll tax that funds Medicare (referring to it, in fluent Washington lingo, as "FICA").

He's famous for long winded answers when he's off script, that's just the "best" of them.

Here's another:

Obama never mastered sound bites and clips. Unfortunately, these debates have the tendency to be nothing but a series of sound bites, and that doesn't play to the president's hand. His extended answers sound like lectures. And nobody likes to be lectured, especially in a long-winded fashion.

Left unspoken was Obama's tendency for stemwinding answers, which also eat up huge chunks of time at his news conferences.

On Wednesday, for example, Obama consumed 31 minutes answering the first five questions, or an average of six minutes per Q&A.

In all, Obama answered 10 questions during the 67-minute encounter.

But the former constitutional law professor has gone even longer. At a press conference last summer, for example, he had a nine-minute answer - as long as his opening statement.

1. Barack Obama can be long-winded.

Well, he hasn't had one in four years.

He's used to getting his ass kissed, and not having his opinions challenged. He get's upset with the mildest of press questions.

But, as long as he doesn't look at his watch...

I think the percentage of truly undecided voters nationwide is at an all-time low for this point in a campaign, but I do remember Kerry getting himself back into the race in 2004 by destroying Bush so thoroughly that the next day was devoted to GOP excuse-making (the flu was the leading culprit) and the following debate gave us Bush's Bulge.

Wow, I had completely, thoroughly forgotten all about the controversy over whether or not Bush wore a radio transmitter and had Rove feeding him the answers through an earpiece. What a time that was.

President Barack Obama’s press conference at 8 p.m. on July 22 was advertised as an opportunity to resolve any of the unanswered policy questions reporters had about the health care initiative he and congressional leaders are attempting to push into law.

An analysis of Obama’s conference indicates the president took 11 questions from 10 reporters over the course of 46 minutes. The 10 reporters took a total of five minutes to ask their questions. The President 41 total minutes to reply to them.

Obama also included an eight-minute opening statement prior to answering questions. Each response took Obama an average of three minutes and 42 seconds to complete. However, the president’s first question, from Associated Press correspondent Ben Feller, took the president seven minutes and 28 seconds to reply to.
