    Re: THE 2012 POLITICS THREAD

This southern pundit, Gene Lyons, has been a pretty reliably liberal voice for a while, so there's some hyperbole here. But others, even in the Republican party, have said something similar, without going so far as to say the Southern Strategy is over: there just aren't the numbers anymore to win a national election based solely on attracting an overwhelming number of votes from white males, which is the only demographic Romney is reliably winning, and which is why these alleged "voter fraud" laws are clearly geared toward disenfranchising traditionally Democratic constituencies. Republicans know they're getting overwhelmed. If it wasn't for the fortuitous timing of winning so many state houses in 2010, the party wouldn't have been able to gerrymander districts their way, and would have been in a world of hurt (in part, of course, because Democrats would have gerrymandered them their way, which is what we have going on here in Illinois).

The thing is, Republicans could get some traction with Hispanics and others, but they're afraid they're going to lose white people. So many Hispanics vote Democratic not because they love everything about the party, but because they believe Republicans have no place for them.

Not that I'm saying Obama is hiding his record, and I really hate when people alter posts like that, but even if he were doing that it would be quite the winning strategy.

But only in the skewed world, I guess.

Can anyone from SJ left justify that Obama is telling defense contractors to violate federal law to help his campaign?

More stupidity from the guy who suggested the head tax:

    http://johntreed.com/Consequences-of-a-two-term-Obama.html

    He finishes with this:
"By the way, at least we know that Obama cannot run for a third term. Why not? It says so right there in the Constitution.

    Uh-oh.

I think his suspending elections and serving for life will be one of those heretofore unknown emergency powers triggered by hyperinflation. The four Justices appointed by Obama plus one pre-Obama liberal Justice will uphold such implicit-in-the-Constitution extraordinary powers."

There is no way that could ever happen.

Didn't get enough satisfaction last week when you posted this link and it was immediately shown to be untrue?

I understand that your boy Drudge used this technique yesterday -- post something as NEW!!!!!!!!! when it isn't, in hopes of raising hackles that couldn't be raised the first time.

It doesn't make you any less stupid for following his lead.

Hell, there's an argument that if the Labor Department held companies to issuing 60-day notices because of sequestration, it would do Obama a favor, because it would remind everyone how obstinate the GOP has been in budget talks.

I think you're grasping here. It's not that, either way, the companies are going to lay off people, and Obama is telling them not to. It's that the companies would lay off people if a budget deal -- which will get done -- never happens, and the companies want to make sure they're not held liable if they don't. The Labor Department is assuring them that they won't, and there's no need to send out notices.

Also, you can't tell me it's not politics that the head of Lockheed would send out notice to all 123,000 employees. What, he's going to shut the whole company down because Congress can't get its shit together?
