He did a hell of a job recruting when he was at USC. I like the hire.

I'm not convinced Kiffin is much different than Mike Shula, except that he might be able to get better recruits.

    Interesting comparison...

Just an early prediction. He's done nothing of note, except get promoted to positions that he really wasn't qualified for but got a leg up because of his daddy (like Shula). If he delegates to good assistant coaches, he should be fine, which Mike Shula didn't.

I just think Tennessee could have found a proven head coach somewhere.

    Such as Nippert Stadium.

Apples and oranges, probably, but the last school to take a fired Raiders coach regretted it.

  7. Putting Ed Orgeron on an SEC staff would be a huge mistake.

Even if he's just a defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator?

I agree that he'd be mediocre at best as a coordinator. But if he's just a DL coach, I don't see the problem.

    So did Ed Orgeron.

  11. I don't see why you'd offer Crazy Ed the coordinator job if you could have Monte Kiffin instead, unless he just has no interest in taking the presumed pay cut (he won't get $2 mil a year at UT). And I can't see him leaving New Orleans to take the same job for a college team.

Buddy/former co-worker of mine lives in Louisiana and said that the Ogre might think going back to the college game would give him a better chance to get another college head coaching job (I'm not sure I understand that logic, but then again, it IS the Ogre). Any way, I don't think it will happen, but having him as a DL coach wouldn't be bad. He can recruit, and he can obviously coach technique at that position, or Payton wouldn't have hired him.

None of this will be as stupid as UT(enn) not hiring Brian Kelly, though. He's going to get the Notre Dame job this year or next, and he's going to be a great hire.
