Newspaper companies have never needed their content providers more.

Yet it's like they would prefer not to have any of them.

    Good luck, Gannett folks.

Glad to hear my friend survived in Montgomery. Sad for Tom Ensey. I too knew him from his SID days at Troy back when I was getting started in the business. Another great guy bites the dust.

Seems like Gannett is gutting the additional publications they boasted about as a source of "new revenue," if what I'm hearing from around the blogs is true.

Anyone else think they come up with their decisions first and then try to ferret out a "strategy," to justify them. Sounds like a lot of folks are going to spend the next month learning new responsibilities, they'll get the hang of it just in time for the next round.

Lots of features editors and designers in this round.

Makes me wonder if they aren't going to try and outsource a lot of the features stuff to one central location.

KWWL-TV, the NBC affil in Waterloo, Iowa, says 36 canned at the DM Register. On top of another round of cuts a while back.

Wausau got hit pretty good, but not the infamous one. Somehow, he always survives.

The publisher is now running the news side with Mark Baldwin demoted to running just Stevens Point's paper, after being in charge of all our four central Wisconsin Gannett papers — Wausau, Point, Wisconsin Rapids and Marshfield. Those four papers combined have six full-time workers in sports, with Wausau and Point having two apiece.

Money talks, and talent walks in Gannett anymore. A damn shame, too. One day there will no longer be any cuts left to make simply because there will be no one left in the newsroom. Here's hoping that everyone in this company can find a better job before getting shown the door.

With all of these cuts, one would think that the company would be improving financially. That's not happening.

Good thing Phoenix isn't one of the biggest golf markets in the country, Luke. Oh wait...

I'm a financial doofus so I have no idea what this means, if anything. But MG's stock price is now 1.87 (I remember when it was over 100), which is down a bit since the great layoff massacre of 4/2/09. Will it suddenly shoot up when all that severance is off the books?

They put a ping pong table in there to improve morale (seriously, had a tournament and everything). Some didn't seem to appreciate my suggestion that they had a driving range, since there's enough room to play golf and not hit anyone.

I wish we had a ping pong table. That totally would boost morale.

I can picture what would happen if my company sprung for a ping-pong table.

They'd buy it at a yard sale. It would only have three legs. Our paddles would have duct tape for handles.

We'd have our request for ping pong balls denied through a 9-to-5 office manager, rendering our table useless.
