I'd love to see the breakdown of how many reporters were among the 1,400 cuts, but it wasn't many, because any reporter job that could be cut, was cut in December or sooner. At this point, it's primarily photographers, managers and people who do other random jobs around the newsroom. One paper I used to work at had seven secretaries, one for every department. The same paper has zero today, although I think the Exec. Ed might have an "assistant"

If you aren't a "content provder" you could have a bull's-eye on your back. Look at the most successful websites. It's not like they are know for employing legions of copy editors.

That's because even the newspapers making money - yes, there are some - are cutting travel, expenses and staff to make as much money available as possible to send back to corporate to try to pay off its debt.

The money is going there instead of re-investing in the product. Great management strategy, huh?

    Gannett Plan for the future.
    1. Layoff 5 percent of staff
    2. Spend a month or two reorganizing newsroom - perhaps come up with a new buzzword or slogan.
    3. See no. 1.
