You are not alone. The toll the business can take on one's eating habits is staggering.

Hence, his name. He used to be SwaggerLee.

Isn't that what they do to train monkeys and other circus animals?

That would be the "no dump" policy.

I suppose the chance to eat the fruit was a Moment of Life.

It's come to my attention that several Gannett outposts are in the hiring process for new talent. Does anyone know what's going on and more importantly, is there any job security with taking any of those gigs being offered?

What typically happens when layoffs are announced ahead of time is a lot of people start looking for other jobs and inevitably leave even if they survive the layoffs.

There's no job security in any job in the newspaper business these days.

Two good points big guy. However, I question why won't they re-hire some of those who were laid off?

Because usually the person laid off is usually a big salary. I know of one place where the person they let go was making $45K and after someone left the following week they called her and offered her her job back at about 65 percent of what she was making before. To her credit, she didn't take it.

My hunch is, times are desperate enough now that there would be people willing to take that. A group (union bargaining unit) might reject such a cut but an individual who has been out in the chilly real world for a few weeks or months might grab at the old post just to have something. Unless unemployment already was paying better.

I'm surprised we haven't seen more of the old Lean Dean approach: You're gone, now re-apply for your old job. At a lesser pay rate of course.

I believe the Asbury Park Press in central New Jersey is hiring deskers.

The Jersey consolidation didn't go nearly as well as planned, partially because folks didn't want to move -- and because they would also have to work with Coyote and Harris. Instead, many editors chose to take a buyout effective June 1.

All page design and layout functions were supposed to shift to Asbury on that date. However, I don't think that's actually happened, particularly in sports. I've also heard of a couple of people who shifted down to Asbury only to leave shortly thereafter.

You'd think all that chaos would equal openings... but this is Gannett.
