If the consolidated desk for the Louisiana papers had been in Lafayette, it would have gone better. I can see people leaving Monroe, Shreveport and Alexandria in droves for Lafayette, but not the other way around. I would imagine the thinking was go to Monroe and people would quit on their own. Gannett got even more than it expected. I hope this experiment fails everywhere it is tried. I'd hate to be low man on the totem pole in terms of deadlines when it comes to getting the paper out on a Friday night during football season. Someone will have to go to press rather early, so who are they really putting the paper out for? Certainly not the readers. Of course, it's been a long time since that's been the case. Sad commentary on the plight of the industry.

I don't believe that. Especially when you consider the bigger papers have the biggest staffs and MINIMUMS that exceed $50K.

Also, the salary poll done on SportsJournalists.com a couple of years ago did not skew anywhere near that low in salaries. In fact, 38.2% were making more than $45,000.

Policemen and firefighters should make more than journalists. Their work is more dangerous, more important, extremely unpleasant and does require at least as much skill and intelligence (albeit measured under a different standard) than what we possess.

Moddy, I beg of you, please stop this thread, and let someone start a new Gannett thread at the appropriate time. This has degenrated into total garbage, and I"ve been chastised by you for "crimes" much lesser.

    Please.

Gannett makes cuts all across Louisiana a few weeks ago for the regional copydesk to open in Monroe.

Now it looks like it doesn't have enough people to get the job done.
