i just don't want anyone to think we're making light of what's happening to the good folks at gannett. those folks deserve their own thread.

Well, this is a good one. The prebudget for Election Night has come out and it's overwhelming as usual. One problem: The news copy desk is half of what it was in 2004. Maybe less than half. No consideration given as to how half as many people will be doing the same amount of work or maybe even more work, on deadline, that night. You can't just blame the corporate suits for this. The overwhelming number of preening chiefs in the form of assistant metro editors, et. al., that Gannett packs into its newsroom who do nothing but pass on error-filled copy to the copy desk adds to the headaches.

Regarding these layoffs and all the others killing off our industry:

Check around 27 seconds into this thing (0:27). Can't get it out of my head.

OK, kind of a stretch. Maybe I'll try to go find something from one of his movies where he was a newspaper reporter. Nice music though.

Gannett proves to be a headache for any paper after it is sold because of their knack for overmanagement. Then those who overmanage become hated as they sit on their ass while others do the work without a single attempt to pitch in. Just guessing, but in another business, I see a similar pattern.

What other business? I'm kinda confused by this post.

So overmanagers turned into lazy slackers without Gannett overseers to guide them? Kind of like how muscle turns straight to fat if you stop exercising?

just because you don't understand what managers actually do, it doesn't make a vast majority of them lazy.
