It's unclear if the layoff announcement is coming today, tomorrow, but will come no later than next week.

I've heard some say it could be as bad as last December's purge, but the popular number being bantered about is 2,000.

I think as editing and designing and photo processing and call centers and ad layout desks are being centrally located, some papers will probably add staff while others are gutted.

Some are already gutted to pay for the photo processing and call center that cost too much.

Did you guys know the call center isn't staffed until 11 a.m.?

    What good is that?

You'll never make it to McLean.

That's what the HR lady told me as well.

You'd think if you wanted folks to continuing buying newspapers that customer service would be a wise investment, but it has been penny pinched almost out of existence.

What no paper at 6 a.m.? Please wait five hours and call our call center in Kentucky (two states away). We will make sure they call the office in Michigan so they can credit you for one newspaper because there is no redelivery.

But they are still advertising for folks. Why?

But ... but, I thought they were going to have 24-hour Local Information Centers? (Yeah, I know they were referring to newsrooms, but the call centers provide information, too).

Another brilliant idea that fell by the wayside.
