Actually, they call people actual people "an information center." I'm not even kidding. It's ridiculous. They call me that at my place and I cringe. I'm a web producer/editor or whatever you call it, not a "information center" I don't hold all the answers. This isn't quiz bowl.

Yay, more cuts! And just in time for another crappy Christmas!

I can tell you this. The morale at the Gannett shop I work is at an all-time low. Reporters/photographers/editors are all doing just enough to remain employed. Everybody just kind of mills around like zombies and the main subject of conversation is always "Who's next to go?"

I just don't understand the concept of centralizing (IE consolidating) everything. We're not making T-shirts or mufflers. I don't know how taking every department and moving it thousands of miles away will = more customers.

It sounds like a disaster. Those involved keep us posted.
I am shocked Gannett just hasn't gone all online rather than taking this bizarre step. Readers aren't stupid. Even more will abandon the print product.

Well, for a few years now, people have been saying Gannett is trying to kill their community newspapers so USA Today can stand alone.

With some of the steps they're taking, you'd have a hard time arguing that those measures are being taken to guarantee financial success and longevity at the community papers.

I'll take the rapists for 20.

    What is Gannett?

When I called my friend (an Exec Editor at a Gannett paper) after the July layoffs, he said, "Well, I guess I'm safe for another 12 weeks."

I'm pretty sure Gannett has had more rounds of layoffs or furloughs in the last 2+ years than any of the other companies.

StaggerLee, I was wondering what's the latest with the Louisiana newspapers. Now that we are a few weeks into football season, I was wondering about the word on the street.

Rumors swirling around my hometown (Mansfield, Ohio) that its paper, the News Journal, will cease printing on Jan. 1. Just rumors at this point, but... with the G, who knows?

With the GM plant there closing, it wouldn't surprise me.

Every week, people ask me, with a worried look, about how my paper is doing. A couple used to get three papers a day. Then Ann Arbor quit and the Detroit papers abandoned them. They're worried that we're next. So am I.
