I'd take a voluntary furlough next year.

Furloughs are infinitely preferable. At least you get something in exchange for giving up salary.

There were years when I was incredibly busy and low in accrued vacation when I would have gladly taken a week or two off unpaid. Just for the breather. Never imagined it would become a needed financial maneuver to keep my damn job. But if you gotta take a pay cut, it's better than just watching your hourly get slashed.

Isn't there some rule/law about having furloughs in three quarters in a row? Gannett had furloughs the first two quarters and then layoffs the next two quarters.

Everyone else in my state is on unemployment. I should try it too!

Media General has had furloughs every quarter this year.

Hard to believe the Free Press and News would be axing 30-odd people. How many do they have left? Maybe 250 total?

As I posted about 10 posts ago, don't know about the News but the Free Press is not axing 30-odd people. There were three people who took the voluntary severance and the union is voting on taking furloughs in lieu of any more layoffs this round. I often wonder, do people actually read the other posts on this board or do they just post and ignore them?

Scripps axed 220 in February in Denver, so nothing should be a surprise anywhere anymore.

Again, the CEOs responsible for this failure to generate growth should resign or be fired immediately. The shareholders should cry for this.
