Gannett is chasing a margin that will not return. It needs to develop a permanent business strategy for current conditions. My fear is, you're looking at it -- furloughs and layoffs.

I know at least one sports casualty at USA Today this week, still nosing around to learn more.

I am another sports casualty. 6 full-timers, I believe. It sucks. You can PM me if you need more info.

The thing is, they don't realize what they get down to when they do these cuts. Yesterday, we had a giant news story land in our laps and those of you who know where I work, know what it was. They were all scurrying around and they come over to the copy desk and say, well, are there enough people here, we're going to take the paper up. Maybe we should call some people in. I'm laughing and thinking, call some people in? You have everyone left on the desk in there already. Maybe you have one person you could call in and that person is taking one of the voluntary layoffs in two weeks. What are you going to do for the next major news story that comes down the pike?

I have seen the sports list from USA Today. Depressing and ugly and sad - I'm not going to post the names right now.

    Moddy,
I understand you want to wait out of respect, but I think the list of names would get the proper treatment if you posted. As reporters, we usually side with disclosure, no?

    Yes. We usually do.

    Here's the skinny:

*I told the person who showed me the list I wouldn't post anything just yet. The Pipeline is always on the case but also honors its word.
*One of my best friends is on the list. I want to talk to him. This is a friendship that goes beyond the business, way beyond.

Anyone else who has it and wants to post it, fire away. Otherwise, we wait.

Having spent 13 of my 24 years in journalism with USA Today Sports, I fear that the list will include some dear friends and colleagues. Dang.

I know one of those names, who I consider a friend and one of the hardest working, most versatile writers I've ever seen. I used to work with his wife.

SoCal SportsJournalists.commers such as MileHigh, Claws, Piotr and SoCalScribe will know of whom I speak.
