Yeah, but you're gonna ruin his ploy by broadcasting it.

Well, considering he's not sports and the number of papers in that chain, I think he's safe.

And when it happens at every paper, they're all gonna blame you.

Is it still workman's company if the fall happens on your way out the door?

Not even if the door hits you on the way out.

I was at a district football selection meeting with eight other colleagues from my region, one of whom works at a small Gannett paper. We were discussing the upcoming cuts, and I asked him if he knew what his status was, and he said he had no idea. Then he added that he wished he would just get cut so he wouldn't have to worry about it any more. How sad is that? I've known the man probably 10 years, and I've never seen him so sullen.

Another longtime colleague of mine - and a damn good one at that - from a Gannett outfit recently dumped his gig for a radio spot. His reasoning for leaving? "Because Gannett is doing all it can to expedite the downfall of our industry."

    Damn sad.

I've read a couple of reports that some Gannett papers are shutting down their presses and will be printed at other plants 100 miles or so away. This is brilliant. Earlier deadlines. Less news. Why do they even bother. They might as well go to a three or four day printing schedule now.

Gannett might be worse than some of the others, but almost every chain is doing the same thing and slowly sucking the life out of the employees there.

Check back in a few months. I'd be shocked if we're not that much closer to that set up.

I've heard of a specific case where this is supposed to happen sooner than later. Great for the paper that will do the printing, suicide for the paper that will outsource its printing.

The thing to do right now if you're looking for income is buy a new press, then let the idiot corporates in your region outsource their printing to you. I don't know that this is lucrative, but there's a good chance it would be.
