    Well put.

I'm already thinking of an exit strategy.

Rochester, NY, copy desk apparently lost one guy who mostly handled sports today as a voluntary buyout.

Staff has been told to report to an 11 a.m. Wednesday meeting. I hate to say it, but I'm pretty sure they're going to lose two more people because the total newsroom hit needs to be in the range of 10-12 position and they only had three volunteers.

Would you buy Gannett stock? Well, no 28-year old trader who's even more frightened for their job (with good reason) than newspaper people is going to, either.
In pure market terms, this is a company that deserves to die. Economic justice would allow the laid off employees to steal every asset of every member of the board of directors, including their clothes.

Not that it's going to make anyone feel any better but the Wall Street traders are losing their jobs, too. A friend of mine who made about $1 mill the past two years lost his two weeks ago. Of course, that's a pretty nice cushion that no one in the newspaper biz has.

Dear God. Between the four of them, by my count, was 96 years of service to The News-Leader. Not 96 years with Gannett -- 96 years AT THAT NEWSPAPER. (I might be off by a year or two; Overstreet left to do TV for a while.) Anyway, that sucks. Hope they, and the rest of the displaced Gannett folk, land on their feet.

Lots of good folks laid off in PHX tonight, including two I know of in sports:

    Copy editor Jack Legg
High schools writer Jason P. Skoda

There may be more, that's what's out there right now.

AP NJ story says 206 at 6 NJ papers.
gannettblog lists 92 (YIKES!) at Asbury and 10 at East Brunswick.
That leaves another 104 at Bridgewater, Camden (Cherry Hill), Morristown (which I heard didn't lose many in newsroom), and Vineland.
