gannett plans to layoff 3,000 by december.

    Yeah, Gannett is so bad so what are the newspaper alternatives that are doing better? Tribune? McClatchy? New York Times?

    This is an industry problem, not a Gannett problem.

    I think the furlough plan is better than laying off another 3,000 people (thought it probably saves a lot more money, too.)

    Who says the aren't going to layoff another bunch of workers. And they can double up when they take their furloughs and then get laid off.

    I think every Gannett employee should take their vacation the same week.

    They're essentially making an across-the-board two percent cut, but nobody is losing their jobs.

    Nobody should be happy about it, but it beats the hell out of more layoffs, which I'm sure will come soon anyway.

    why in the hell wouldn't they let someone take one day off a week for five weeks. Then you would have saved 40 hours. I'd much rather have my paycheck being a little less for a little while than freaking half one week.
