I'm trying to see the positive in this. Yes, I get to keep my job. Yes, my co-workers get to keep their job.

But this is not the end. Don't be surprised if employees are forced to take a one-week furlough every quarter until things improve. I mean, 14 days into the first quarter and you're already panicking? I call bullshit.

Not only will there be more layoffs (because there wasn't any foreseen layoffs after the August layoffs either), there will be more furloughs and more cutting of the paper and more reducing of the costs.

Face it, Gannett is an evil, greedy corporation. And the only way Dubow et. al can continue to drive their Bentleys and fly in their Leer jets and drink their expensive champagne is by making us, the peons, suffer.

    Fuck them all.

    I'm done.

They are probably going to do all this without overtime. I haven't had any in a few months now. Guess that has been cut out, too. Of course, it would take a few days of overtime to make up for 1 week of regular time. There would go the savings.

Furloughs? What this means is the good beat reporters now will still be on call and working on their furlough time filing in secret reports or telling their replacement beat writer exactly what to do and babysitting him/her. You can't tell me people won't be working on the furloughs. Just like some of us work 70 and get paid 40. Fucking amazing, Gannett.

And also along with no raises people are giving up a week's salary. But hey the company is off the hook. You know these are better than layoffs.
Do what you desire Gannett. Go all online now and speed up the death of this business. Please do it.

There should have been language in there that said, in exchange for this, Gannett vows there will be no more additional layoffs this year.

My girlfriend works for a Gannett paper and was notified of this unpaid shit this morning. She has to let them know what days off she wants before she leaves tonight. I told her to take the permanent unpaid vacation.

We just got the word in Detroit that we don't have to participate in this because of the new system we're implementing (the much-maligned three-day delivery thingy). so there's that. Oh, yeah, also, there's the tiny matter of a union contract.

Our local Gannett paper doing the same. No word yet if the Publisher Of The Information Kiosk's wife will continue to get paid to write her column and the blog they promo through the moon even after they laid off 15.

Well there would be no sense telling people they are cutting delivery to save jobs and then lay everyone off for a week.

Yes, Gannett would never do something that didn't make sense!

Such as, telling employees that the company is perfectly healthy as it undertakes a year of gutting the product and slashing the staff. Nothing to see here people, move along!
