This has been the worst-kept secret for months. Hell, we've had threads on this board that this layoff was coming.

Can you imagine what morale is at every single Gannett paper right now?

The other thing that people are saying is that almost all of these cuts are going to be newsroom. The advertising jobs and the HR jobs were all the ones that were the first to go in the last wave.

This will be mostly writers and editors.

    Merry Fucking Xmas.

You inferred that I was quoting the Bible. All I gave was The Prayer of Leona Helmsley.

actually, i was "saying" that another former board member used to make posts along those lines. and also, this thread is not about you.

people are losing their jobs. can you not show a shred of respect?

One of my favorite lines from the movie Rounders: "It's highway time."

That crosses my mind whenever I see threads about more layoffs.

I'm trying to be proactive with this. My wife and I have started discussing how long we'd be able to get by on one salary, what other jobs we'd pursue, where we'd cut back, if we could keep the house. Usually we don't finish the conversation because it's just so depressing. But to put it bluntly, we're scared as hell.

It's been over a year now, and I have yet to hear one encouraging word about this situation.

I don't think it's ever going to get better.

We've seen nothing that will indicate that it's ever going to get better.

You were the one that tried to make it out to be me, the yawn thing.
I was on the subject before you started with your sidetrack.

It's like Alzheimer's. Staying the same or getting worse slower would be just fine.

You could take the people who have been forced out of the business and start a staff that is as good as almost any in the country.

Nothing matters anymore. There's nothing 99.9 percent of us can do to make our jobs any safer than anyone else's.

Got a buddy at a Gannett shop w/ roughly 40K circ. Apparently they're cutting $600K in salaries.
    That's all I got, FWIW

oh, you could put together an all-star staff, but who'd be willing to fund it?

to be honest, i don't know if even i'd invest the money if i had it ... now that's what's sad.
