    Chef is first in line.

And I remember when ESPN would televise repeats of Notre Dame and UCLA football on Sunday mornings. I still remember seeing John Carney kick for ND, and Steve Bono and Rick Neuheisel have a QB controversy in Westwood.

It beat watching Davey and Goliath on regular TV available to me.

Bob Knight once said that people learn how to write in the second grade.

I'm sure the suits will consider trolling that talent pool soon.

The person who wrote that was on crack. Lets just write 10,000 words about "plan execution" and "determining real news"

What about the CHIN elements (or INCH, the term at some papers) of the late '90s?

    Context
    Human dimension
    Impact
    News

Get each of those elements in the first five grafs of your story. That's how to write, people.

How many of you Gannetteers went to those seminars? How long do you think it took someone to come up with that brilliance?

Exactly. If they need to teach you how to write the news, they shouldn't have hired you in the first place.

It's not about teaching people how to write the news, it's about justifying their salaries. Kind of like taking credit for teaching a dog how to take a dump.

Hey now, that's not as easy as it sounds.

And it's those people of skill who have fucked the country up.

Mark2010, call me an old fart as well. I remember those days. A live sporting event on TV was really a big deal. In this oversaturated era, there were 16 college basketball games on TV last Saturday.

In one of my last columns at that particular paper, I worked "context," "human dimension," "impact" and "news" into the first five paragraphs.

(Come to think of it, "news" may have been "news value." It seems like a lifetime ago.)
