The way Gannett has been cutting USA Today, I don't see that happening. They're already depending on local papers to help pick up their slack, and now USAT is supposed to help the local papers pick up THEIR slack?

Good points. USA Today really is a nice product though, IMO. But if it gets slashed big time I'll take that comment back. I do like reading it. Has all the box scores, agate type stuff you need; one long sports story that sometimes is readable and all those short ones, many that are interesting. I am wondering if it will be the only paper around next year at this time. If it gets slashed to hell like the rest of the country's papers, then I'd change my position as you pointed out.

it's another example of the well-thoughtout planning made time and time again by this company.

If this company was a horse, it would have already been shot and turned into glue.

Anonymous posters on the Gannettblog say workers are going to be taking a 5 percent pay cut instead of a second round of furloughs.

So if the furlough wasn't bad enough the first time (only 2 percent of the pay, and you can collect unemployment for a week) now its five percent and you have to work!!!!

Morale is going to be through the roof.

Kee-rist. I cringe whenever this thread reappears ... and there's normally a good reason to do so.

I don't know... it's all speculation, but the speculation was right about the cuts, and the furloughs.

speaking as someone who was laid off, 93 percent still beats zero. sorry, at least they're trying to save jobs, unlike the POS place where I worked.

While I understand the frustration of those that have been laid off, my problem with that attitude is this: The layoffs and cutbacks would not be needed if the company woke up and accepted that things have drastically changed.

Gannett is not trying to save jobs. The company has proven that all it cares about is making more money.

Newspaper profit margins will never be what they once were. Set more realistic expectations, and you won't have to slash and burn all your newspapers.

Plus, it's time for management to stop lying to its employees. Quit saying no newspapers are making money. They're making money, just not enough according to plan. For example, they consider it a three percent loss if the company expects 18 percent profit and gets only 15 percent. It's still 15 percent!!!

Instead, the suits act like stubborn children, upset that they can't make as much as they used to. They punish their hard-working employees and lessen the quality of the product.

It's absolutely sickening. I wish there was a way to force all the suits out and start over. I just don't know how things are ever going to get better if these same knuckleheads remain in control.

Everything almost seems to be beyond saving anymore.

Hilarious. Gannett started the furloughs and copycats abounded.
Now Gannett is copying Scripps or whomever went with the 5 percent cuts.
    This is too funny.
My god. Go all online Gannett. Do it now.
