Who knows? Maybe with this happening, we might get spared.
    Dear Co-workers:

This morning, I underwent surgery on my back. I am pleased to report it was successful and I’m doing fine. I am beginning a leave of absence to recuperate.

During the time I am on leave, the Board of Directors and I have asked Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Gracia Martore to step in as our principal executive officer. She will work with our management team to seamlessly continue operating the company as I recover.

This was major surgery, with all its potential for complications, but it is not rare. I have a great medical team and I hope to make a full recovery. My doctors have predicted I will need about a 4-month leave, but the exact length is unknown at this time.

As a result, I wanted you to be aware of the situation before a press release goes out. The announcement is expected shortly to make shareholders aware of my absence.

Be assured, Gannett is in good hands. We have the strongest management team in the business and they have my complete confidence.

Thank you and I hope to see you soon.

I might regret writing this, because it's probably obvious and I'll be forced into a "well, duh," but who wrote this?

Assuming it's from Dubow, but yeah, an attribution would be good.

    Add: Yup.

So is he going to lose his job during his leave like more than a few of his employees have? Will his supervisors determine "the operation of the company did not suffer in his absence, and so we'll move forward without filling the opening"? And "wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors"?

So are they laying off again or not?

I want to be prepared since CNHI always follows Gannett's example.

Now we know the reason for all the layoffs and furloughs by Gannett: to rebuild Dubow into the Six Million Dollar CEO.

Wait, I think he would be the Eight Million Dollar CEO.

Good to know. I had kind of given up hope that Hopkins would return the comments section.

The words "Gannett" and "brain" do not belong in the same sentence.

I gave up on Hopkins' site when he made it clear he just wanted to be famous. When he started making the blog about him, I tuned out. Gannettoid is a pretty bad site, but if it can provide some of the inside rumors Gannett Blog was doing, I might start visiting.

How did he want to become famous?

I'm pretty sure initially he set out to be the Gannett watchdog, but at some point along the way, he started to enjoy the fact that other media outlets were linking to his site and quoting his site. And I think once he realized with that recognition could come fame, he started to make the blog less about Gannett and more about himself.

When he showed up at the shareholder's annual meeting with a bodyguard, because he "felt threatened" by Gannett, I lost respect for him. If you followed Gannett Blog during the weeks leading up to the meeting, you could see him start to make the Blog more about him and less about the evilness of Gannett.

He served a very good and useful purpose, when he was reporting on the layoffs/cuts/furloughs/mergers/etc. But he ventured away from that and that's when I stopped reading.

Here's a quote taken from his blog, a few days after announcing he was ending Gannett Blog:

The sooner Gannett dies, the better.
