1,400 impacted? Does he really think that everyone else won't be affected by seeing 1,400 co-workers shown the door? What a pathetic, jargon-filled piece of corporate-speak.

A former co-worker, obviously let go at the end of February, latched on at a Gannett paper and now, obviously, is worried after moving a good distance. Possibly looking at being laid off twice in less than five months.

Our newsroom has nothing left to cut.

    1 Executive Editor
    1 News Editor
    1 copy desk chief
    1 sports editor
    1 web editor
    1 multimedia editor/photographer
    1 photographer/videographer
    2 copy editors
7 reporters/ sports reporters. Each reporter has a backup beat in case the primary beat person is out.
    1 editorial assistant.

17 people - I don't know how we lose anymore and still put out a paper.

    *puts on his executive hat*

Drop a reporter, you can always drop a reporter.

Drop the editorial assistant and spread that person's work around.

Combine the web editor, multimedia editor and videographer into two positions.

Lose the copy-desk chief and put that work on the news and sports editors.

    Now where's my six-figure salary?

Don't dare any publication to say they won't find a way to cut deeper. Just when you think it's as lean as possible, some suit, bean counter or "consultant" will beg to differ - then show you they're not kidding.

    Or what RickStain said.

Even better drop three reporters, add an editorial assistant.
I noticed the fewer EAs we had, the more time I spent not reporting. Better have the EAs do reporting work at a cheaper price than the other way around.

You're not sorry enough to refuse your massive bonus for cutting jobs and ridding the company of those silly publications ...

    :D

Buddy called me a few minutes ago and said CNN said NONE, NONE of these cuts are in advertising. So why? Why are they cutting productive people yet holding on to the very souls who can't sell water to a thirsty man?

Stringers for everybody! At least, that's how our silly bosses think.

EDIT: (Clears throat) I meant, that's how our brilliant, daring, cutting edge and innovative bosses think.
