At-will employment. It's what makes this country great. (Eyeroll)

Well, in a way, that's the goal. Gannett is squeezing the turnip as hard as it can on the way down. It's not TRYING to keep people motivated to stay. Stuff like three Indy Star sports reports with 90 years' experience taking a buyout instead of reapplying -- that's a feature, not a bug.

Everyone has a right to work. The foundation of this country is that work shall set you free.

The Party Crashers beat sounds fun. Also an Eat, Sleep Politics beat. Which is code word for the reporter working 24 hours a day.

Those sound cute now but you can see some new beancounter coming in two months years and saying "wait, we have a 'Party Crashers' beat?" and throwing it on the layoff pile.

On Facebook the Star posted, for funsies, a long-time staffers old and new IDs, in conjunction with the Star moving out of 307 N. Pennsylvania St. and into Circle Centre Mall. (The Star is taking over a department store location that closed.)

The old ID said, "The Indianapolis Star."

    The new ID said, "Gannett."

I haven't weighed in on this (other stuff got in the way), but with that said, the Des Moines Register just went through another round of the Gannett squeeze. New job titles and responsibilities and all staffers were told to reapply for the new positions, from what was told on the streets.

It was announced in the Register today that sports columnist Bryce Miller has decided to leave to pursue new ventures. It was rumored that he was one of a few that decided not to go through the dog-and-pony show of reapplying for the new job positions.

Wasn't Bryce Miller the sports editor not long ago?
