I really think this is the right move for the Jags. I just don't see the reason why they didn't do this last Saturday.

At a miniumum it should have been done prior to the Kickoff Luncheon.

Is there a possibility he rejected a pay cut and this is why he was released? That's often the case when it gets close to the season. Garrard's entire salary would have been guaranteed for the season if he had been on the roster for one more day.

For this season, are they a better team with him or without him?

If they had their doubts about him, they should have never brought him back to camp.

Heck, they could have traded for Palmer, right? Now they are stuck.

How could they trade for Palmer when the Bengals have made it abundantly clear they won't move him?

Why would they want Palmer when they're grooming a rookie to take over?

You let McCown play for a few games and then, you bring Gabbert along slowly. It's not going to get them a lot of wins this season, but it's a pretty good way to groom a QB, rather than have huge controversy halfway through the season when they bench Garrard.

My only issue with this is that they should have made this move on the cutdown day. I don't believe for a second that they didn't know they were going to do this, unless Garrard just started acting like a malcontent, which I really doubt.

Sometimes you have to sacrifice some or all of a season to get a QB where you want him to be. Hell, look at what the Packers did when they got rid of Favre. They had a shitty season with Rodgers as the starter and two years later, they win a Super Bowl.

Obviously, it doesn't always work out that well, and Rodgers wasn't a rookie, but unless you're Matt Ryan, Ben Roethlisberger or Sam Bradford, most QBs are going to struggle if they have to play as rookies...

Ther ideal way to do this is have Gabbert mentored this season and next season have your QB battle.

You don't throw this kid to the wolves like this.

And only one of those QBs has ever won a playoff game.

And the Steelers didn't want to use Roethlisberger his first season, but Maddox was so awful and so hurt that they had to.

And to cross thread, Beano Cook gets nailed for the Heisman stuff, but he also called, when Roethlisberger was in his first training camp, that the Steelers would win a Super Bowl in three years with Ben.

and we get back to Devils defacto playoff logic.

Rodgers hadn't won a playoff game till last year. Bradford has played one year and I'll bet you anything you want that Ryan will win multiple playoff games.

In the first couple years, it is very hard for any QB to have any sustained success. Roethlisberger only won a playoff game his rookie year because the Jets can't kick field goals.

I would grow the QB for a year, then send him out. I just don't see what good can happen from sending out a QB so soon. Especially from day one. Heck, tell everyone you will re asses the QB situation at the halfway point of the season.

Heck, Gerrard was 8-6 as a starter last season.

At the owner's meetings before the Manning-Rivers-Roethlisberger draft, a NFL coach (a bad one, who is no longer a NFL HC) told a couple of us that he thought Roethlisberger was the best QB in the draft by far. That caused more than a few eyes to roll, but he was right on.
