I mean this respectfully- but why is the guy retiring when it's been well-noted here and elsewhere he has had a lot of help with sourcework in creating his quarterly theatrical productions?

  8. There were a round of layoffs buyouts at SI recently (the ones that claimed Trotter and Lemire) maybe Smith just figured it was time.

Unless Gary posts on here, you'd probably be better off asking him that directly.

Why do that when you can speculate endlessly?

Anybody 60 years old with the means to retire should be able to do so without anybody questioning his reasons.

That being said, he is retiring from "SI magazine writing," which means maybe he'll write books or who knows what else.

I know it would be a lot more fun if he wrote till he was 85 and then we could debate how he's "lost his fastball." But he's denying us that pleasure.

    Agree 100 percent with this.

The guy is 60 years old and has written for SI for like 30 years. In what way is it in the least bit strange that he would walk away at this point? It would be strange if he didn't.
