But I do agree with this post outside of its context as a rip on my believing Thorne.

Maybe we should get Mike Nifong on the case.

It was a general comment that also applied to your post. Not only did you dismiss the possibility of Thorne making something up (I agree there), you also dismissed the idea that Mirabelli could have been messing with him and either Thorne fell for it or decided to go forward with shaky information.

But you are ready to believe in this elaborate ruse and question the integrity of Schilling, his manager and at least two players who have come out already and said this is bullshit instead.

Yeah, I have issues with your comment. And yes, I think part of the response here is because the knee-jerk response of many people on this site is to side with the reporter/broadcaster against the athlete no matter what.

OOP, I wonder if part of the reaction is because it is Schilling. Yes, Thorne is a large factor, but you can't leave Schilling out of this.

Oh, I understand that. But we're assuming a lot here and to make all those people liars just because Thorne said so and we think he probably has a good bullshit detector? That's a bit much.

Apparently the Game 6 2004 ALCS sock is not the one the Hall of Fame has. The Hall of Fame has the sock from Game 2 of the World Series.

Much of the lore about the 04 Red Sox seems almost borderline fraudulent now. From the way they billed themselves with the image of the spunky underdog battling against the odds when truth is they were nothing more than Yankees-light spending more money than anyone but NY, to the way nearly the entire roster had evacuated or been dealt within a couple years of the win. Now we have the legend of the bloody sock called into question as well? Perhaps its time for a piece revising the accepted history on that team.

This isn't a new thing. The Lady Vecsey raised the idea in a column a year or two ago.

And it didn't look like blood at all. It looked like something out of a zombie flick. Fuck Schilling.

I think Mirabelli said it, and he was kidding, but he didn't use the vocal blue sarcasm font, and Thorne believed him (because everyone wants to believe it was a lie).

That doesn't mean the truth wasn't hidden in the joking. Had it been Wakefield, Mirabelli would never have said it, because he knows where his bread and butter is. :D
