No doubt about that. But I can't see him doing the whole 'paint' thing.

"...there's no doubt in my mind that's not what he said..."

What the fuck is Thorne saying here, other than the obvious response of a raging double-negative?

He thought the guy said it at the time.... how can you unring that bell?

Also, Mirabelli said he didn't know who Gary is, and had to look in the media guide for his picture.
    One problem with that:
Gary was hired late and is not in the Orioles media guide.

Sounds like Doug is in CYA mode to me.

I'm amazed Thorne could even begin to present that as a serious remark (no less a fact) on a broadcast. And even if you do plan to toss such a serious charge out there, wouldn't you want to go back and reconfirm and ask some more questions about it first?

thats nitpicking Markvid.....maybe it was an industry mag., or an Orioles organization news letter that someone handed him to show the picture....

Sorry, Ash...players know what media guides are. A lot of them read it for stats, etc.
I just think Mirabelli knows he made a bad joke and is backtracking.

Also, not to turn this into a WWL-bash thread, but anyone notice the lack of mention by ESPN on their web site that Gary is also an ESPN announcer? At least USA Today had the spine to add to the wire story that he's with ESPN and a USA Today columnist.

Thorne definitely did not apologize. He just went into lawyer-speak, cover-your-ass mode.

But the way he just threw that out there so long after the conversation with Mirabelli, and to do it without checking the information...it all just sounds very strange to me.

I agree they know what they are, and read them often.....but this was an impromptu press conference, he didn't release a statement.

    From Schilling's blog...

So Gary Thorne says that Doug told him the blood was fake. Which even when he’s called out he can’t admit he lied. Doug never told Gary Thorne anything. Gary Thorne overheard something and then misreported what he overheard. Not only did he misreport it, he misinterpreted what he misreported.

    Pretty presumptious.

Maybe, but I see a much bigger problem with what Thorne did. Schilling is right to want an apology. At the very least, Thorne's handling of this was extremely sloppy.
