Does that mean Peter King has cancer?

They do get guaranteed contracts in the sense that they get massive signing bonuses.

You think it's unaccounted-for in his case?

Floating stools are one of the biggest telltale signs. Cancer has an awful sense of humor.

No... He denies it, but everybody says he had the surgery. Not gastric, but the band put on his stomach.

I know a couple people who have had lunch with him and they insist he eats about two bites and that's it.

Maybe just portion control, but he seemed to dump that weight overnight.

    That's surgery, for sure.

    Or cancer.

I agree four days is shocking, but all cancer ain't the same and pancreatic's probably the nastiest sort there is--incredibly fast moving and, on top of that, about the hardest to detect in early stages. These cases you hear about where death comes shockingly fast after diagnosis usually involve the pancreas.

Plus, Upshaw's a notorious tough guy used to living with pain, I imagine he could ignore a lot of it before going to the doc. Shocking nonetheless.

As an old-time Raider fan, Gene Upshaw was the rock of those great teams of the '70s. Anyone interested in a decent article on Upshaw should take a look at the piece Gary Smith did in SI in the last year. Thoughts and prayers to the family.

Considering he dumped the weight three years ago, I'm guessing it was surgery and not cancer... :D

It's shocking that Upshaw died so soon after diagnosis, but why are some of the dimmer bulbs on here thinking he offed himself or that there's some mystery to it?

I mean, why does someone get hit by a truck? Why does someone die in a plane crash? Why does someone seem perfectly healthy one day and die of a heart attack the next? Just because the cause of death is medically-explained, doesn't mean death won't be sudden. Sometimes death has no explanation.

RIP to Upshaw. One of the greatest offensive linemen of all-time.

there's a reason why pancreatic cancer is known as the silent killer. it indeed is very, very hard to find and by the time someone is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, it's usually too late. mortality rates are extremely high.

that said, my sainted mother was diagnosed in april 1999 and given 6 months to live and really no hope. well she beat the hell outta that evil bastard will celebrate 10 years next spring thanks in large part to the miracle workers at m.d. anderson cancer center in houston. she's mda's longest-living survivor!!!
