Two names to add to the middle-of-the-night-time-filling-syndicated-sports-shows-on-marginal-stations Hall of Fame:

    Ed Randall

    Ann Ligouri

I liked this show a lot as a kid. It really used to kick ass. Back in the day, when he'd first fire up the machine, it would make these generic robot and Speak and Spell type sounds. It was supposed to be a marvel of man. And it was, because it was cooler than Atari or ColecoVision or anything around at that point.

I cannot believe it's still on the air.

Ed Randall fascinates the hell out of me. It will be Saturday morning at 5:30 a.m. and for some reason I will have the radio on and he'll be on the fourth hour of an interview with the scout whose claim to fame was discovering Terry Crowley in 1970. And the intro and build up when he gets back from a commercial break will be so reverential that you wonder if you are about to hear an interview with Branch Rickey from the afterlife: "A man who certainly needs no introduction on this humble radio program. One of the sharpest baseball minds to ever grace the planet, and I, for one, am eternally grateful that he has graced us with his valuable time.... etc. etc."

And then every question gets prefaced with a rambling segway that drops 10 obscure baseball names from Mexican League. And somehow, it all just works.

MLB radio has a podcast that features him sometimes. It's usually the most painful 35 minutes anyone can subject themself to, but like a moth a flame, I'll sit there, the picture of concentration to hear what the assistant to the assistant general manager of the Tidewater Tides has to say about various prospects. How can't I? "He's a man who is as an astute judge of talent as you will find anywhere in the game of baseball..."

I interned for Ch. 4/George Michael Sports Machine way back when. The man is a cock. His wife, if I recall, was decently hot, though.

The George Michael Sports Machine was something I would see on occasion at night and promptly flip the channel -- not unlike SportsCenter.

Question: So this was a weekly syndicated sports clips show and some host who had no connection to the local town would show these dusty highlights every Sunday night?

    And people watch?

    Here's George's fem-bot d'jour, Lindsay Czarniak (she smiles A LOT):

I read dusty higlights, sports clips and no connection and the first thing that popped into my mind was Bernie Smilovitz...

Is Andrea Broady still on the show?

Classic! The highlight of any trip to Shea was seeing Ed in the visitors clubhouse, working the room like Wayne Newton, quietly asking the players if they were using their tickets for this series.

I guess he always over-promised and the Mets limited him, so he had to hit the other side. There isn't a Latin player who doesn't have 50 relatives in New York, but Ed would always seem to squeeze a couple tickets out of some rookie.

Damn, how could I forget those two?

Ligouri's show is the clear last-place finisher among our crappy quintet. Quite an accomplishment. We'll air her in between test patterns, just to see the audience drop.

Any chance she's related to Chet Czarniak, who was/is in the sports department at USA Today? Her bio says her family lives in NoVa, so it's possible, I guess ...
