I don't know too much info about this program, but it sounds similar.

Other states are much more complicated, including two that I would be involved with: N.Y. and VT.

A recent blog post from one of my favorites, Erica Smith. Title is "Five things to do on your furlough" but all are relevant to transitioning out of the business:

  4. That's tough to hear, since teachers are needed so much.

MediaBistro just started a new blog called MediaJobsDaily.

I don't know how much it help with actually getting a different job, but it may be worth adding to your bookmarks.

    Finally someone says it.

My friend always tells me, "Go get your teaching degree." I scoff at the idea everytime.

  8. Not in my (former) neck of the woods. Teachers are needed terribly, and they get paid real well. Better job security there than newspapers, that's for sure.

In my neck, they are. Somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 last year around the state. This year, it's a whole bunch of 100 layoff notices and 200 layoff notices, here and there.

  10. Sad to hear. Schools in Texas are practically begging for math and science teachers.

I attended a nonprofit and public service career fair this afternoon. The booklet of employers is available as a PDF. There were lots of teaching and teaching-related positions, as well as jobs for social workers, nurses and others in health care.

I got plenty of strange looks when I explained I'm a journalist who would like to apply my writing and editing skills to another field. You'd think their four-color brochures appeared out of the ether! ::)

The most promising lead was from the U.S. State Department, which apparently is due to get a 41 percent budget boost if President Obama's most recent proposal gets through Congress. The recruiter, a career State employee, said journalists are uniquely qualified to be foreign-service officers.
