Going from Sports to News? Is there any risk involved?

That last bit is especially important. Those massive meeting round-up stories are awful. Better to pick up the most important news, then develop other items into separate stories or features.

As others have said, little risk involved. When I was on sports, I was covering 4-5 games a week, then back into the office. Now, I usually have meetings on Monday nights only, though Friday night football in the fall as well. Particularly once/if you have a family, you'll like the change.
One main thing to keep in mind is it's a different mindset covering a game vs. a council/school board meeting. A game is usually relatively simple, especially once you've covered a few. Yes each game is different, but the same basics each time. At a meeting, the subject matters are often vastly different each time. Sometimes you have to pay attention during a 45-minute discussion about sewer systems, which is harder to stay focused on than a 45-minute half of basketball.
