Going to an interview ...

    I agree with Frank on this (the suit part) with one small exception. I wouldn't wear a $1500 suit to an interview for a $35,000 a year job--even if you only paid five bucks for it.

    I think you dress appropriately for an interview which could mean a blazer, shirt and tie and khakis.

    The first thing I do to prepare for an interview is call the city's Chamber of Commerce and ask them to mail me a relocation packet. They are a wealth of information about the community and often have a map.

    Definitely wear a tie and nice shoes. Sport coat works as well.

    Be confident, but not obnoxious.

    Maintain eye contact.

    Have a good, firm handshake when you meet and when you leave.

    Do NOT rag on your current employer (or anyone else for that matter). You never know whom they know. Be positive about yourself and others.

    ASK about costs of health care. If you have a family, that's as important as your salary.

    Ask to take a couple of issues of their paper home with you. It shows you're serious.
