Going to the drive-in movie

In HS, packed Mickey's Big Mouths into the trunk with my buddies to watch the latest release in the late 70's; too many to remember. A movie under the stars in a warm summer night was a great way to spend a night.

Kids are now too old to hang with us, but about 5-7 years ago we started going to our local drive-in and it was fun, pulling out chairs and snacks, letting the kids hang in the back of the minivan and meeting up with a couple of other families.

They built a new drive in near the big outlet mall east of Birmingham a couple of years ago that's supposed to be really well done, with an indoor restaurant, putt putt, etc. But they charge by the person (not carload) and you aren't supposed to bring your own food and drink. What fun is that?

We have two a comfortable drive from us. Every other year or so, we go and have a great time. Looking forward to when the oldest granddaughter is ready for it.

The concession stands have a lot of good junk, too.

When I was in high school, I was very into SCUBA diving, and the dive shop to which I was nominally attached had this big-ass tank (maybe 8, 10 feet in diameter, 10 to 15 feet tall) they'd trot out now and then to gin up business. The last non-porno drive-in around there had a promo once in which several of us "dove" in the tank and waved to all the kiddies walking around. The movie was Piranha.

    Same here for Rocky.

I have a drive-in about a half hour from me. I hadn't been to one in years, and I was surprised the first time we went that we didn't need those speakers in the window anymore. The drive-in had an FM radio station to tune into to listen to the film.

I think the last "regular" (ahem) movie I saw at a drive-in was Billy Jack.

There's a drive-in about 20 minutes from where I live. It shut down when I was a kid, but someone bought it and reopened it about 10 years ago. They show two movies and charge $6 a person or $15 for a carload, IIRC. It's been a while since I've gone to that drive-in, but the experience has always been pretty great.

Funny when people who are outside a drive-in complain when an R movie is showing.

Loved the drive-in as a kid. Not sure if it was my first, but the first one I remember is the double header of The Jungle Book and Star Trek II.

Your parents thought it was a good idea to bring a 6 year old to see Blazing Saddles?
