Explain to me again how LBJ was the last senator to be elected president.

I'm not exactly sure what that is supposed to mean other than missing the blue font.

And I stand corrected on the WashPo article, Rick Davis is quoted as saying Palin was vetted etc. but it's only one quote. Hell, he might have been the other unnamed sources as well. It still doesn't add up. I guess now at least we have a good sense of McCain willingness to do the unexpected and his disdain for making safe cautious decisions.

  4. As soon as you explain to me why you're so bitter and such an asshole in your advancing age. (This isn't the first post of yours I've read.)

How would you define runner-up though? Who was the runner-up to McCain? Romney got the second-most votes, but Huckabee was in the race a month longer. And, hell, Ron Paul is still technically in the race. I suppose candidates would be less likely to drop out if there were a consolation prize, but you could still engage in plenty of persuasion to make sure the "right" guy stuck around long enough to get enough votes.

And if you wanted to do most total votes, how do you handle caucus states? Or the fact that different states have different rules about who can vote in primaries? Hell, are we still even completely sure who got the most actual votes in the Democratic primary?

I'm not saying it's a bad idea; just pointing out it may not be as easy as it seems.

Kefauver was Adlai Stevenson's running mate in 1956. But Stevenson didn't select him, he was elected, over Robert F. Kennedy, by the delegates at the convention for the VP role.

Stevenson himself preferred Kennedy as his VP, but allowed the delegates to vote for his running mate for him.

  7. I agree. It's not necessarily a bad idea, but its implementation is another question. Raw vote? Number of delegates? I don't know.

And when exactly did Estes Kefauver serve as vice president?

Ah. I think I misunderstood your question.

By elected vice president, I thought you meant nominee, not actual VP.

I'm confused about the underlying assumption of this matchup. Is it that McCain would win and serve only one term? Because otherwise you're not going to have two new tickets in the race. It would either be McCain-Palin against a Dem ticket, or Obama-Biden against a GOP ticket.

Like I said earlier, I wonder if the choice of Palin is an implicit statement that if he wins, he intends to run again. I just don't see them wanting to put her forward in 2012. 2016, maybe.

My point, GB, was you can not vote just for the vice president...therfore, it is mostly inconsequential when McCain chose Palin or Rudy Guiliani or Tom Ridge. Or whether Obama chose Biden or Hillary or Ted Kennedy.
We vote for a president and the VP candidate comes along for the ride.

The last elected vice president was also, until this administration, the last vice president to shoot someone while in office. :D
