Grantland so far

I don't know what the hell the site is "supposed to be" but it is barely on my radar. Nobody I follow on Twitter ever sends a link across about a story or talks on up (other than Chris Jones, but that's because he's writing them). No one on Facebook is sharing stories from Grantland.

The only time it hits my consciousness is when I see a thread pop up here. I tried reading the Ty Cobb and Detroit story but lost interest quickly and had no desire to read the 30,000+ words (or however many) to see if it got any better.

The internet is not well-made for long-form stories. You better make it interesting for people to keep scrolling and scrolling. I'm sure the site will stick around because it has some heavy backing, but I didn't come in with high expectations based mainly on the fact people don't want to sit at their computer for 20 minutes to read one story. My limited evidence is proving me correct thus far.

I too believe my experiences are universal! Thus, Grantland sucks!

And yet, I spent 20 minutes on nytimes.com discovering the weddings section.

I have no doubt the NYT wedding's section is interesting in itself, but I don't need a scoring system for it.

So she already did this once for another blog? And she's reprising that for Grantland?

And they say there are no new ideas anymore.

WE HAVE FOUND OUR COMMON GROUND!

NY Times wedding announcements are a world unto themselves. I adore them.

Actually found this to be one of more entertaining articles of Grantland to date. Not sports related whatsoever, but what's the big deal.

Did find her point menu to be discriminatory against gay and lesbian couples that appear in wedding section of the NYT.

Don't worry, I'm sure a 5,000-word article about the Tao of Willis will be along presently. And I'm sorry, but Alma's listing of the top stories is damning as to Grantland not really giving much of a darn about its supposed mission of sports long-form writing. If its mission was just Simmons-esque writing, he could have started a free-standing site and called it something more to his liking

Was there a time when Grantland actually enunciated their commitment to sports long form writing or was that something that was done by SJ posters?
