I really liked that too, would love to go to that some year, while leaving all credit/debit cards at home!

These pieces on Grantland are finely written and often compelling, but damn they are long. It seems like reading long pieces is a lot easier when they are in-print and not on a computer screen.
Good stuff, at the end of the day though, by the various writers.

They've also launched a daily radio podcast featuring several of the writers. Simmons hosted the first one talking about Madden 12, but he's not supposed to do any more. I know they had a soccer one Wednesday (which I didn't listen to) and a baseball one with Jonah Keri on Thursday (have downloaded, but not listened yet).

Weinreb continues his run as Grantland's only compelling staff writer. He's simply too good for Grantland. His stories have all stood out as significantly better than those of his coworkers.

If I find something worth reading (and there have been a few; I actually found the Julia Roberts fame piece interesting), I print it out. The interwebs have made it difficult to read long stories online.

As far as good writers, I actually find much of what Katie Baker does to be good reading, culture-wise.

I don't really think Grantland has just one compelling writer. That's a bit tough.

Yes - really good article. Still find that easiest way to read Grantland is to rely on recommendations from this thread.

I've really come to look forward to Baker's "scoreboard" for NY Times wedding announcements. It also made me look at the announcements themselves, which are about as unique as anything in the newspaper.

I'm shocked by how much I enjoy those articles.

Still trying to figure out sports connection. I guess it falls into pop culture.

Grantland has existed long enough for me to offer a reasonably informed opinion. Overall, it has been pretty much as I expected. There have been a number of pieces which I really enjoyed, and a larger number of pieces which I gave up on in ennui/disgust before finishing or didn't even start because I didn't care about the topic.
That is by no means a negative review. Nobody publishes any periodical, electronic or otherwise, where readers devour every feature with sheer delight. It's enough for me that the pieces I like I like a lot.
IMO, Katie Baker's Times wedding schtick blows. MY wedding was in the Times, back in 1982. Wedding annoucements are formalized and stilted in every newspaper. So what?
