Greasey burgers, Bourbon, Faulkner, The Grove, Rebel Flag,Hwy 61....

  1. Talking solely percentages ...

5 percent is lot - when discussing Ole Miss, or Oxford, compared to the backdrop of being a "travel" writer.
Oxford has a few things that are nice, no doubt, but nice enough to merit that much attention? (Again, five percent of the "travel" focus on Oxford?
What's so great about it to merit that sort of attention, compared to NYC, LA, anyplace Texas? or Billings, Montana?

Ole Miss is not a perennial national powerhouse in any sport.
Does the food and beer there really merit that much attention? How many times can you write about The Grove?
As for hot coeds? That's hardly limited to Ole Miss. It's kind of an SEC staple.

Having spent plenty of time in Billings, I can assure you I would much prefer to visit, discuss, think about, and/or celebrate Oxford. As would any sane person.

Gee, I wonder why America is lagging...

  5. 5 percent of his stuff on Ole Miss would be spot on if he was focusing only on the SEC. But as a "travel" writer (whatever that is with regard to ESPN), that's a LOT of effort devoted to ol' Colonel Reb.

Probably not as distinctive a culture to write about, but also an area that has not been done many times. Moose, cabins, lazy rivers, giant trout, wholesome women in flannel shirts, Bruce Willis, militia............

Hey I was being charitable. Flannel shirts should have been the telltale.

It's not the percentage of Football in the South stories, it's that a tired convention persists.
These pieces have been written for the last 35 years. And now they fall under the umbrella of Southern Exceptionalism.
Which flourished decades and decades before Thompson was born.
And I can see where this thread is headed once again so I will kindly ask for the bill.
