    Melvins - No Melvins...no Nirvana.
Supersuckers - Diligently toiling away in a quarry to bring us rock.
Cheap Trick - Playing at a state fair near you.
Mr. Bungle - If you ever saw them live you understand.
    Slayer - Ditto
Guided By Voices - Because this list needs a band that can play two minutes of pure pop perfection for four non-stop hours. With high kicks.
KISS - They have their own friggin' army!
My Morning Jacket - Because Neil Young is from Canada.
The Replacements - Completely unpredictable live shows. Always a treat when they had to pull someone out of the crowd to play bass because Tommy passed out.
The Raspberries - Or as I like to call them, "America's 'Badfinger'"

    Sirs, Madames,

I've always thought that the Beach Boys would be at the top of the list and the Byrds ahead of CCR in the wake. The posters who mentioned the Blasters and the Replacements, enlightened more than others will ever know. Blasters ... more American than a showroom full of Harleys. One name that I haven' seen so far: Little Feat. The original line-up could have given music lessons to the Eagles if they'd have shown up for class. A personal fave whose output is too small to warrant me fighting for them: Semisonic. More what could hav been.

    YD&OHS, etc

i love the fact that some people who dismiss nirvana as overrated because their singer offed himself also mention the doors, the single most overrated act in american rock history (and i kinda like the doors, but that doesn't mean they aren't criminally overrated)

    i'm liking

    the beach boys
    ccr
    r.e.m.
    the pixies
and bub's p-funk choice was inspired
(and this list will change constantly)

and i would say bruce and e street is disqualified while the heartbreakers are not...

  9. I love GnR and wanted to list them. But as much as a I like them, I don't they can be considered much more than a glorified cover band - the same with Van Halen..
Yeah they rocked, but they did so by covering a lot of songs.

The Blasters are one of the greatest American rock bands nobody knows. The major-label debut still sounds great, 20-odd years down the line. Tremendous live, too, particularly when Dave Alvin is with them.
