I got the impression the writers were using Momma Burke to tell the characters what the viewers think. Much too meta.

I look at most tv for the entertainment factor and not the critical acclaim. I think sometimes people on this site want tv to be a little too realistic and not so entertaining. That's probably just me, though.

I'm having a real problem with plausibility now.

One of the main reasons I've enjoyed the show up to this point because my brother is in the same "place" as the Grey's residents. He completed his surgical internship last year and is now a surgical resident at a hospital not unlike Seattle Grace in that it sees a lot of trauma and interesting cases.

But it's great because when I see him, I can bounce stuff off him like, "Would a plastic surgeon really be the lead surgeon in charge of reattaching somebody's arm, or would it be a vascular surgeon?" (The answer was yes, McSteamy could be the lead doctor on a team that reattaches a limb.)

But let me tell you what doesn't happen. Somebody's sister matching into the same program as her sister.

Somebody having to repeat his intern year because he "failed" a test. Yes there are tests, but they're usually not a pass/fail deal, they're not that hard, and if you didn't get the score they wanted you to get, they'd simply make you take the test again. The hospital is too invested in you at this point. You've come to far. The system is now weighted to help you succeed.

I didn't even bother to ask about the deer.

It's difficult to find such odious characters entertaining.

It's a challenge to slog through a show that so cheerfully insults your intelligence.

It's impressive to be able to stand a show that features people with so few redeeming qualities.

It's amusing to watch the actors so far this season (and really, since the three-parter from last year) and get a real sense that they no longer fully believe in the material.

Excellent analysis, Piotr. You summed it up perfectly in four sentences. And the "don't believe in the material" stuff is only going to get worse when Heigel starts getting the itch, more and more, to be a movie star. She's going to keep looking at the contrived, repetitive, ridiculous situations Rhimes keeps puts her character in, and demand, maybe by the end of this season, that her agent get her the fuck out of her contract before it's too late.

What you said, right there. Especially regarding the show featuring people with so few redeeming qualities.
It's the same reason why I quit watching Desperate Housewives. I hated all the characters and had no interest in how they ended up.
I don't need my characters to have the moral high ground. Three of my favorite shows are Dexter (the main character is a serial killer), The Shield (... a dirty cop) and Rescue Me (... an alcoholic firefighter). But, the storytelling is great and there's something about these characters that are likeable.

I'm beginning to think it's an ABC thing. The majority of shows on ABC center around young, rich, good looking people having relationship issues and either having sex with or backstabbing each other (sometimes both). LOST is one exception, and I'm sure there's a couple more, but you get my point.

ABC's Dirty Sexy Money is outstanding, but I'm already worried about how this is all gonna turn out with the network's track record.

Re: Grey's Anatomy: On a nice run now, before the next "event!!!!!"

I don't know who wrote the first two episodes this season, but they have obviously been kicked to the curb. The show has gotten a lot better, and this week's about high school stupidity hit every note and kept the theme going throughout. Best one of the season; I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Then my enjoyment and noting of the show's revival was severely dampened by the advertising of "The Next Grey's Anatomy EVENT!!!!!!!!" coming up next week.

Yay. All that momentum, and here comes the manipulative crap.

Shonda Rimes wrote both, and since she's the showrunner (ex. producer, etc), she obviously did not get kicked to the curb.

But I agree the show has improved somewhat in recent weeks.

Watching Private Practice, I think she's there now. (continuing to speak facetiously, of course)

    Wow, that show is dismal.

She created a good show, but needs to continue letting the writers do their thing. Her name on a Written By credit is like Gene Roddenberry's name on Star Trek: you know you're getting something sadly subpar.

I've got no problem with Private Practice, either. It is what it is. Some people's cup of tea.
