Ah, I still see signal callers or field generals in copy, although not staff copy. But it comes from freelancers all the time.

I think I said this once on another thread, but one unusual thing is kind of going on: The young people are doing an almost retro return to at least a few of these terms, the one I'm seeing most being "hurlers."

Me too. The competition uses ALL. THE. TIME!

    Drives me nuts.

Always a "veteran" signal caller, though.

There was a reason I didn't include it in the thread title. ;)

Thinclads ... I would fire someone for using that term.

  7. I use field general and signal caller in my stories. I'm going to disagree with the majority here.
It gets boring using same terms over and over. If I can think of another term to describe a player, position, event, point or whatever I will.
People reading sports stories will know the a field general or signal caller is the QB.

I have seen other writers, instead of carries, describe "totes of the pigskins."
Caroms, charity stripe, buckets... whatever works.

I'm guilty of using a lot of these words as well, sometimes for fun but usually to write around using the same word over and over ...

No on all of them. It's bad writing.

Same with tilt, gird, slate. Etc.

If you are resorting to that kind of stuff to de-bore your stories, you've got bigger problems than what to call the players.
