Now I'm on a little Zappa kick.
Check this guy doing 'Lumpy Gravy':

More cool stuff, a new type of bridge that keeps your guitar constantly in tune. It's pretty amazing.
This is not a locking bridge system, something that has been around for a long time. This different and pretty innovative.

Guy plays the Super Mario Bros. theme on an 11-string bass:

THE single biggest regret/heartbreak of my life. I want to be able to play so bad I can't stand it, but my ability to play the guitar is just below that of a seal. I think I've gone through five guitars I've owned, three personal instructors and countless DIY techniques.

No matter how much desire is there, there has to be some natural ability. I don't possess it.

The Lost Fingers (great band name), a gypsy jazz-ish trio that does a lot of rock and pop interpretations:

I am not defending the singing nor am I mocking it.
    But this is cool.

Very cool guitar on one of the greatest pop songs off all time.

(Yes, it's 11:30 a.m. on the West Coast and I'm drunk.)

This is a nice effort. I'm not making fun of the guy, but he's set Abercrombie's brand back about 20 years.

This isn't actually recorded in the 1980s, but Robert Smith single-handedly makes 1980s pop music relevant.
Check out the toy piano riff:

Not guitar-oriented, but more evidence that the 1980s had great music despite BYH's horrible taste:

Back to guitar, but sticking with the 1980s:

I'm drunk and almost cried thinking about Hedges. what a f*cking player.
    RIP

    More evidence that:
    1. Michael Hedges was a guitar god.
    B. Even 'bad' music can be cool if you play it right.
iii. Even those of us who never sported zubas are embarassed that they existed.

(Great comment about lyrics being unimportant. That's a player.)

Not the 1980s, but more Hedges.
    Genius playing.
I don't defend the lyrics, but kind of complex for a player who admits lyrics don't matter:
