30 percent - given me a place to have some fun
30 percent - expanded my network
30 percent - been informational and helpful as I go about my life and my job. Book tips, bar tips, work tips, you name it. Hell, here is where I learned about woot.

10 percent - driven me crazy. But I knew the job was dangerous when I took it and I'll gladly deal with the one shitty day in exchange for the nine great ones. I'd like the number to go down to about 1 percent but, well, it is what it is (I love cross threading)

Happy Birthday, SportsJournalists.com, finest site on all the Internets.

This is my favorite place, as 11,112 posts, soon to be 11,113, would attest. I found out about it one day a-googalee-googalee Googling my name after a firing in the ol' southwest, and some of y'all's was *discussing* my departure; it was an interesting convo to be read, that's for sure. I became a prisoner signed up here in 2003, posted for a year or so then forgot my password one day and started the new, improved Songbird.

Has it changed me? Yes. How? I don't know. But I'm all the richer for knowing most of y'all. In our biz, it's work work work work work work work and all no play (at least for us working dogs with no outside life). So you get to become I-friends with fellow journos, even if you never meet them face to face, thank you very much, Daft Punk. This wonderful place is a think-tank for all the right and wrong reasons. On one of the many "write a hedline" threads, I've gleaned, used, STOLEN some of the fantastic ones (I hope some have used mine). Great place for important or innane debates. Wonderful universe filled with pro's pros, worker bees, award winners, anal sexers of neighbors (hi, Boots!), fitness-minded freaks and journalism fatties who'd love nothing more than to get their fitness freaks on, newbies, burned-out grisled vets, know-it-alls and knowledge-littles, Wenalwayans ... A real dysfunctional lot we got.

I hired two people from SportsJournalists.com this year, and both are young, eager, go-getting youngsters with the journalistic world at their fingertips; thanks for coming up and working with me, Ty and Aud -- both of you enhanced the product.

When I'm road-tripping it I always wonder what people here are talking about, and how many threads Boots is starting and getting locked. As Oasis blasts into my head and I eyeball the people in small towns, I often think, "Oh, this is something SJ's got to know about."

On and on and on I could write about sportsjournalists.com, but I've got to uses the bathroom so I'll refrain lest I shart, AGAIN.

    Happy birthday, SportsJournalists.com (and thanks),
Songbird (or as Rick Reilly likes to say, Xanadon't).

Next beer at the *F.O.S.* is on me ...

    Zip it, Good Doc!

And yes, I AM THE BOY WHO SEES CHRISTMAS LIGHTS FOR THE FIRST TIME. But goddamit, boys, I'm a Jew. A mofo Jew. So put up a goddman menorah lit with candles instead of Xmas lights. What's a Jew to do?

Oh, yeah: To Central Illinoisan, your Murphy posters are among my favorite things here. We need more of them. And we need more "Greta and Johnny" :D

This place (Xan included) kept me from taking the gig in Roswell.

For that, it has my eternal gratitude.

Xan made it possible for me to experience Lionel Ritchie's constipated look in the Commodores videos. Xan, you are my hero!

This is what I have to thank SJ for...

I've been on here since October 10, 2002 at 08:54:29 p.m. (why doesn't it list 10ths of seconds???), so I guess I can't celebrate my five years on here until Wednesday night. :) Up until the last year or so, though, I mostly was a lurker.

You may have known me from the previous board as "Anon."

Strictly a coincidence, I'm sure. Or a cosmic alignment of the forces of the universe. I was wandering the deserts of the internets looking to replace the vitriol, banality and humor of the sportspages.com forum, and then the previous incarnation of SportsJournalists.com. Plus, I was greatly missing anon 4:24, anon 6:52 and anon 9:06. Then, I heard a voice that beckoned me to type in this infamous web address and frank voila, I was here. Just before that bastard Victor, I see. Happy 5th, SportsJournalists.com. Does that mean we have to raise our level of behavior to kindergarten status now? I'm still not sure we're all potty trained....
